Mogadishu, Somalia — August 13, 2026

The Somali GIS Association (SOGISA) took part in Mogadishu Climate Resilience Week 2026, held in Mogadishu from 12–14 August 2026 under the theme “Building a Climate-Resilient Mogadishu Together.”
The event brought together professionals, organizations, and stakeholders to discuss the challenges facing Mogadishu as the city responds to climate change and works toward a more resilient future.
SOGISA contributed to the discussions by highlighting how GIS, satellite imagery, and geospatial data can help us better understand climate-related challenges and support practical decisions in our cities.
One of the maps presented by SOGISA focused on urban street waterlogging hotspots in Mogadishu. The map shows areas identified as potential waterlogging hotspots during April–July 2026, providing a visual picture of where rainwater may accumulate across the city.

The analysis used satellite and geospatial datasets, including Sentinel-1 SAR, ESA WorldCover, JRC Global Surface Water, OpenStreetMap, and Banadir administrative boundaries.
By bringing these different sources together, GIS can help identify areas that may need closer attention, particularly when planning drainage improvements, managing stormwater, and preparing for heavy rainfall.
