Decades of satellite observations power new service for tracking climate change

EUMETSAT has launched a prototype Climate Anomalies and Normals service that draws on more than 40 years of satellite data to show, within days of a month’s end, how key climate variables compared against their long-term averages, delivered as maps, charts, time series, and downloadable data. Unveiled at the European Meteorological Society’s annual meeting in Utrecht, the tool comes as Europe’s summer of 2026 raised urgent questions about just how extreme recent conditions have been, with July soil moisture data showing that large parts of the continent were drier than in any other July on record.
Australian GIS, aerial imaging experts helping Nepal

A 15-person Australian Disaster Assistance Response Team drawn from the Queensland Fire Department and Fire and Rescue NSW has deployed to Nepal, bringing drone pilots, GIS specialists, and 3D mapping capabilities to support search and rescue operations in a remote and hard-to-reach disaster zone. The team will fly drones through areas too dangerous for ground crews, providing real-time aerial imagery, impact assessments, route reconnaissance, and 3D debris mapping to guide Nepalese authorities and humanitarian partners on the ground.
